Pune: The District Consumer Forum has ordered the National Insurance Company Limited to pay Rs 1.30 lakh compensation to a farmer from Daund, whose leg had to be amputated due to injuries sustained while working in the farm in 2016. The company had not given his claim amount earlier under the farmer accident insurance scheme. 

Babasaheb Tatya Mengawade of Rajegaon in Daund taluka of the district had filed the complaint with the Additional District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Pune, in July last year. 

As per his complaint, while working in the farm on January 21, 2016, he had fallen down. The injuries were such that one leg had to be amputated. With all the required documents, he filed for claim from the company through the talathi but he did not get any amount. 

The company had opposed the complaint stating that at the time of accident, Mengawade was not covered under the Gopinath Munde Farmer Insurance Policy. The company had claimed that the accident happened in 2013 but did not submit any proof for this. 

On the other hand, Mengawade submitted his treatment documents and the forum considered them to reach the conclusion that his accident happened on January 21, 2016, and his leg had to be amputated. 

Hence in a judgement on January 2, Consumer Forum Presiding Officer Shubhangi Dunakhe and member Anil Javalekar ordered the insurance company to pay Rs one lakh under the insurance policy with nine per cent interest since January 21, 2016, till payment of the amount and Rs 25,000 as compensation and Rs 5,000 as litigation cost.
